Matthew J Doughty is a Published Songwriter/Composer, an Internationally Credited Recording Producer/Engineer, and an experienced Musician and Music Instructor. Beginning with the Piano at age 8, he studied under a private tutor for five years until hearing the Electric Guitar work on "The Top Gun Anthem" in 1993. It was this moment that he knew music had a grip on his soul, and that he would have a life-long love affair with the guitar.
Doughty spent the mid 90's to early 2000's leading Rock Bands and Church (House of Worship) teams all across California and into Mexico. In 1998, at the advice of his friend Chris Davies, Doughty opened his own project recording studio in Yuba City, CA. Continuing to write & perform his own music, he also began to take on outside projects. The first full-length studio album Doughty produced & engineered was an international success. Stabilo Boss came more than 1000 miles from BC, Canada to work for six weeks on their self-titled release which helped earn them international recognition and a record contract.
Living and working in Music City USA (Nashville, TN) afforded Doughty a number of opportunities. Interning with stage/studio guitarist Chris "Graff" Graffagnino gave him a backstage pass into venues such as The Ryman Auditorium & The Grand Ol' Opry at Opry Mills. Also studying Television & Film production, MJD Operated camera & assisted the post prod offline editing for the GAC (The Great American Country) Channel thru Reba McEntire's company "Starstruck".
Working on Music-Row in the Nashville Recording Studio Scene was thrilling. During this time, Matthew got to work with Charlie Daniels, Bryan Lennox, Michael W Smith, Chris Rice, SheDaisy, Nickle Creek, and more. Working in recording studios such as the Sound Kitchen, The White House, The Carport, and Ocean Way Nashville, Matthew J Doughty is proficient in the use of both digital DAW (ProTools, Cubase, Radar II) & analog tape (2", 1/2", 1/8") formats.
Graduating with a BBA in Music Business from Belmont University in 2002, Doughty traveled back to LA and began working on first rate sessions such as Fleetwood Mac, The Killers, & Econoline Crush under legendary Producer/Engineers Mark Needham, Rob Cavallo, & Sylvia Massy. He spent three & a half years operating lighting & sound for concerts & conventions at Disney in Anaheim, and after two years of working with IATSE for large stage productions such as Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and Linkin Park; he was ready to go on tour.
Performing Electric Bass Guitar for bands (We Shot The Moon, K Sera, Crooked Creek, Billy Blackburn, and 110), he has entertained the local Sacramento music scene, toured over 37 states, & played the World-Famous Whisky-A-Go-Go on Hollywood's Sunset Strip.
By the Spring of '08 it was clear that it was time for him to focus on Creating Music. "I remember walking down hallways as a kid, just singing "new" melodies to the shadows", Doughty says. "My mom would ask me what song I was singing, and I never knew what to say. In high school, i began journaling and created a system to organize all of the melodies, harmonies, & phrases I hear when my mind is at peace. I believe the difference between a Musician and Writer is Organization!" Roadtrippin' between Sacramento, Seattle, Vancouver, Yosemite & Yellowstone for nearly a year, MJD began to build his songwriting catalog. While he writes in multiple genres, he currently focuses on Music for Picture (TV/Film), Pop/Country, & House of Worship.
A multi-instrumentalist, Matthew plays acoustic & electric guitars, 4 & 5-string bass guitars, drum set & many forms of percussion instruments, along with the piano & most keyboard instruments (strings, b3 organ, etc.) Most recently, Doughty is proud to have his music supporting the drama of some of TV's finest programs. With this newest 43 min of his instrumental compositions acquired by a Hollywood Production Company, Matthew J Doughty is a Published Television Composer before the age of thirty.
